8-3 Criterium-7

Racers bank in a turn in a past Statesville criterium.

The Gander RV Crossroads Classic will be this Saturday, with a day full of activities in Downtown Statesville.

The actual Crossroads Classic will kick off at 1:30 p.m., culminating in the Pro race, which will start at 9 p.m. A series of activities have been scheduled surrounding the event in addition to the multiple criterium races within it.

The popular Trike Races return at 5, 6 and 7 p.m. There will also be an (Almost) 5K and Beer Mile.

Carolina BalloonFest will be holding a Balloon Glow on East Broad Street during the later races. Come out and get a close up view of a Hot Air Balloon at night.

Registration for the cycling and running events are available online or at the event www.crossroadscyclingclassic.racesonline.com/register.

A criterium-style bike race is a circuit race held on downtown streets or in a business park and is typically less than 1 mile in length with several tight corners. The 80-plus person “peloton” or group of cyclists, will race between 25 and 40 miles, based on their category. These courses are also closed to traffic, which allows the spectators to get up close and personal to the excitement of the race. They are able to witness the strategies of the teams as they draft off each other at speeds of over 40 miles per hour, a breakaway from the main pack, sprint finishes, and the occasional crash.

In conjunction with the event, there will be:

An End of Summer Bash, 9 a.m. to noon on West Broad Street in Downtown Statesville. Free to all, it includes inflatables, balloon art and face painting.

A Swap Meet (biking and running gear), 9 a.m. to noon in the Old Jail parking lot off of Court Street in Downtown Statesville. Bring your used biking and running gear and sell it; complete bikes, shoes, car racks, apparel, bike parts and accessories are expected to be part of the event.

A Statesville Kids Expo, in conjunction with the Greater Statesville Chamber of Commerce, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the grass at Broad Street United Methodist Church, 315 W. Broad St.
