The Youth Big Band of Germany evolved out of a love for jazz. It will now bring its talents to Statesville – the group is performing tonight at 6:30 at Mac Gray Auditorium at Statesville High School. Admission is free.
Started at the Altes Gymnasium in Flensburg, which lies on the border to Denmark. About 40 years ago it has since become a worldwide touring group.
Since its foundation, the band has given numerous concerts in Flensburg, in Schleswig-Holstein, the Federal State where Flensburg is located, and in other parts of Germany.
The band has toured to Denmark on several occasions and visited the United States in 1983, 1985, 1987, 1989, 1991, 1996, 1998, 2002, 2005, 2008, 2012 and 2015.
For more than 16 years the ensemble has regularly visited Great Britain as a participant in the International Youth Exchange with students from Carlisle in the North of England.
The Youth Big Band took part in International Jazz Festivals in Russia, England, the Ukraine, Germany and Japan. During its travels the band has appeared on German, English, Danish, Russian and American radio and television.
The band has produced three long-playing records as well as seven CDs in the 1990s and 2000s, with the most recent in 2016.
The repertoire is traditional and modern jazz music, but the big band also plays arrangements of contemporary popular music.
The group will be joined by the Statesville band and chorus tonight.
