The Statesville Owls exit the All-Star break Monday and Tuesday at 15-15 overall and fourth in the Southern Collegiate Baseball League standings.
Infielder R.J. Conner (Catawba Valley C.C./Statesville High) and outfielder Ausar Rankin (Rockingham C.C./West Iredell High) are the SCBL All-Stars representing the Owls at the Southeast Prospects Showcase in Cary.
Statesville opens a three-game homestand at West Iredell High School with Wednesday’s matchup against the Lake Norman Copperheads, who are fifth in the SCBL standings. The Owls welcome the Charlotte Crushers and Piedmont Pride on Thursday and Friday, respectively. The games feature 7 p.m. start times.
Next week marks the last week of the SCBL regular season. The Owls are at home Monday against the Mooresville Spinners but finish on the road against the Concord A’s (July 23), Lenoir Oilers (July 24) and Lake Norman Copperheads (July 25).
Almond among top finishers at renowned rodeo
Olin’s Mikayla Joh Almond recorded a top 10 during the International Finals Youth Rodeo in Shawnee, Oklahoma, last week.
Almond posted the sixth fastest time in the pole bending championship round short go Friday. She and her horse completed the run in 20.404 seconds. It was her best performance of the week in that event, and it allowed her to finish ninth in the final event standings. She pocketed $233.44.
The top 15 averages in each event earned the right to participate in the championship round. Almond, who also competed in barrel racing, breakaway roping and goat tying, registered times of 20.641 and 21.054 in her two long go-rounds of pole bending competition.
ACHS hires basketball coach
The Alexander County Board of Education recently approved the hire of Jon Presnell as Alexander Central High School girls basketball coach.
Presnell takes over for Jonathan Winkler who announced his resignation in March after two seasons at the helm. The Cougars were 2-23 overall in 2018-19 and finished last in the split 3A-4A Northwestern Conference.
A 1997 graduate of Alexander Central, Presnell played two years of basketball at him alma mater. Prior coaching experience includes serving as ACHS JV boys basketball assistant coach in 1999 and JV head coach in 2000, as well as East Alexander Middle School boys coach from 2002-06.
Babe Ruth baseball registering for upcoming season
The Babe Ruth Association of Iredell County is currently making plans for its 2019 fall baseball season. The association will try to put leagues together in the following age groups: 5-6 (T-ball), 7-8 (machine pitch), 9-10, 11-12, and 13-14.
Play will begin after Labor Day and run until Nov. 1.
