West Iredell 2, South Point 1

BELMONT—West Iredell overcame a one-goal deficit in the second half to beat South Point 2-1 in the opening round of the 2A state playoffs Wednesday night.

The 10th-seeded Red Raiders broke a scoreless tie in the 54th minute. The Warriors (11-9-2), seeded 23rd, answered in the 65th minute. Bryan Rivera flew down the right wing and played a cross to the back post where Ben Guzman put the ball away.

With 6 minutes to play, Rivera turned on his defender inside the penalty box and slotted a ball to the center. Julian Her placed his shot by the South Point keeper for the game-winning goal.

Garrett Stiltner recorded five saves in net for West Iredell.

The Warriors will host No. 26 seed Winston-Salem Carver at 6 p.m. in Friday’s second round. Carver (9-8-1) knocked off No. 7 seed Ashe County (12-10) in the first round, 2-1.

South Iredell 9, Erwin 0

TROUTMAN—South Iredell, seeded fifth in the West, routed No. 28 seed Erwin 9-0 in the first round of the 3A state playoffs Wednesday.

The Vikings (18-2-2) scored eight goals in the first half alone against the Warriors (10-13-1). No other details on the match were available.

South Iredell will host No. 12 seed Hickory (16-5-3) at 3 p.m. in Saturday’s second round. Hickory downed No. 21 Enka 7-1 on Wednesday.

Statesville 2, Western Guilford 1

Statesville, seeded 14th in the West, scored one goal in each half Wednesday night to beat No. 19 seed Western Guilford 2-1 in the first round of the 3A state playoffs.

No other details on the game were available.

The Greyhounds (12-7-2) will travel to Asheville to face No. 3 seed T.C. Roberson (19-2) at a to-be-determined time in Saturday’s second round. The Rams were a 7-0 winner over No. 30 Montgomery Central (13-8-1) in the first round.

Ashbrook 3, North Iredell 2

GASTONIA—One of the best seasons in the history of the North Iredell boys soccer program ended in the first round of the 3A state playoffs Wednesday night.

The 18th-seeded Raiders (17-5-1) led 1-0 at halftime but yielded three second-half goals and lost 3-2 to 15th-seeded Ashbrook (12-3-3).

Juan Nieto scored both of the North Iredell goals. Goalkeeper Dane Coltrane finished with seven saves.
