A suspect was arrested just before midnight Thursday and charged with the murder of a man who lived on Sigmon Dairy Road.
Justin Drew Dalton, 32, was apprehended after a Catawba County Sheriff’s Deputy observed the suspect’s vehicle in a parking lot located on Springs Road NE in Hickory, a release from the sheriff’s office said.
With assistance from Hickory Police officers, Dalton was arrested after a brief foot chase.
Dalton is charged with the murder of Emden Lee Syres Jr. that occurred on May 29 at 3476 Sigmon Dairy Road in Newton. He is in custody at the Catawba County Detention Center. No bond was set on the murder charge, the release said.
Dalton also faces charges that include larceny of a motor vehicle and two charges from 2017 – misdemeanor child abuse and driving while license revoked, according to the release.
Earlier this week, the sheriff’s office began investigating the death of Syres, 47, as a homicide.
“There are signs of trauma,” said Catawba County Deputy Chief Brian Kelly. “There’s no signs of forced entry. The back door was ajar when we arrived on the scene.”
The sheriff’s office also investigated several bullet holes in the house around the bedroom, Kelly said.
