A Statesville man was charged with robbing a convenience store at gunpoint last week.
Maurice Dennard Jacobs, 26, of Hull Street, was charged with armed robbery and served outstanding warrants for community threats, identity theft, financial care theft and breaking and entering.
The Statesville Police Department reported that Fast Phil’s located at 1530 Shelton Ave. was robbed around 6:30 a.m. Thursday. Police answered a holdup alarm at Fast Phil’s and were told by the store clerk that a man with a mask covering his face came into store.
While grabbing the grip of a gun, he demanded money and walked around the counter, ripping the cash register out and then leaving the store, police said.
A short time later, Sgt. Anthony Hamby saw a man fitting the description and the man fled on foot near Fifth Street and Goldsboro Ave. Sgt. Rance Young then saw the man running north on Wilson Lee Boulevard, police said. Young was able to detain the man and he found a BB pistol on him, authorities said.
Cpl. Turner saw the video of the robbery and identified the man as the person responsible. The clerk, who was brought to the scene where he was captured, also identified who as the person responsible. The cash register was recovered on Fifth Street.
