A Burlington man is facing a felony charge of sexually assaulting a 7-year-old, Iredell County Sheriff Darren Campbell said in a news release.

Joseph Michael Johnson, 26, was arrested Sunday by the Burlington Police Department for felony indecent liberties with a minor and received a $30,000 bond from a magistrate in Alamance County.

Campbell said a report was filed Oct. 4 in relation to a 7-year-old and indicated the assault occurred between July 31 and Aug. 3.

Detective Sgt. Katie Harwell of the Special Victims Unit began an investigation. The investigation indicated the charge resulted from actions that occurred while Johnson was visiting relatives in Iredell County.

Harwell interviewed several people and then contacted the Burlington Police Department to find Johnson.

The investigation is continuing, and additional charges are possible, Campbell said.
