A cyber tip from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children led to the arrest of a Mooresville man on rape and exploitation of a minor charges.

Casey Alan Smith, 25, of Barkland Lane, was charged with four felony counts of third-degree sexual exploitation of a minor and one count each of statutory rape of a child, second-degree sexual exploitation of a minor and indecent liberties with a child. Bond was set at $76,000.

The four third-degree counts were filed as a result of an investigation by the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office and the remaining charges were filed by the King Police Department.

Iredell Sheriff Darren Campbell, in a news release, said the Special Victims Unit received a cyber tip in January.

The information indicated that a person was uploading images and videos of juveniles and prepubescent girls nude or engaged in sexual acts to an online Cloud account, he said.

Additional data attached to the account displayed a phone number listed as belonging to Smith, Campbell said.

Detective Sgt. Jason Lowrance began an investigation and he obtained a search warrant to access more material on the Cloud account.

When reviewing the files, several additional images and videos were found to have been uploaded to the account, Campbell said.

During the investigation, Lowrance discovered a report had been made with the King Police Department in February involving Smith, Campbell said.

In talking with detectives at the King Police Department, Lowrance learned Smith was a suspect in a statutory rape investigation, Campbell said.

Lowrance located evidence uploaded to the Cloud account concerning this investigation and he shared that with the King Police Department, the sheriff said.

Lowrance obtained a search warrant for Smith’s residence and that was executed Friday. Several electronic devices and other evidence were seized, Campbell said.

A magistrate set a $16,000 bond on the Iredell charges and bond was set at $60,000 on the King charges.
