A Statesville man has been charged in the death of a Mooresville woman following a motorcycle crash Friday night on U.S. 421 in Wilkesboro.
Steven Ray Shrewsbury, 55, of Sebastian Lane, Statesville was charged with felony death by vehicle, DWI, driving while license revoked and failure to maintain lane control. Shrewsbury received a $25,000 secured bond when he appeared before a magistrate.
Staff at the Wilkes County Jail said Shrewsbury posted bail Monday.
A report filed by Wilkesboro Officer Dallas Wyatt said Shrewsbury was operating a 2012 Harley-Davidson motorcycle Friday and traveling east on U.S. 421 Friday evening. The report stated the bike ran off the left side of the road and the driver was unable to maintain control, causing the bike to lie over while going nearly 60 mph.
Passenger Lisa Anne Stewart, 48, of Lakeland Drive, Mooresville was ejected from the bike and hit a guard rail more than 100 feet from where she was thrown, the report stated. Where the driver came to rest is unknown. The report added the bike came to rest around 500 feet from where it initially ran off the road.
Stewart was transported by EMS to Wilkes Medical Center and was later flown by helicopter to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, where she died.
The incident reportedly happened right before the Exit 286-A ramp.
Wyatt said Shrewsbury appeared to be intoxicated, noting his slurred speech and watery eyes.
The report also states that Shrewsbury gave conflicting statements to authorities.
Wyatt’s said that Shrewsbury was taken to Wilkes Medical Center where he recorded a breath alcohol level of .16. Shrewsbury denied medical treatment and signed himself out of the hospital, Wyatt states in the report.
He was then placed under arrest.
State records show Shrewsbury has a criminal history involving drug paraphernalia, DWI, two counts of driving while license revoked and resisting an officer.
He is scheduled to appear in court in Wilkes County Oct. 2.
