Several businesses in Iredell County recently received multiple calls from people impersonating deputies, Sheriff Darren Campbell said in a Facebook post Wednesday afternoon.
Campbell said the sheriff’s office received multiple reports of calls to real estate offices in the Mooresville and Statesville areas with the caller claiming to be Deputy Jason Hampton or Deputy Chad Bentley with the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office.
The victims reported they were told they had missed jury duty, the post said. Campbell said victims were told to bring two self-addressed stamped envelopes and their identification to the sheriff’s office to remedy the situation.
The post said callers indicated they would contact the victims a short time later, and instruct them to purchase gift or debit cards, and call 704-842-3779 to use the cards to pay the fine.
Capt. Bill Hamby said that four businesses have reported these false calls so far, and that more may come forward now that the incidents have been labeled a scam. He said the calls were made Wednesday.
He said the sheriff’s office wanted to alert people to the issue because the deputies being impersonated are familiar to the public.
The incidents are currently under investigation.
If you receive or have received such a call, contact the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office at 704-878-3180.
