The Iredell County Sheriff’s Office has arrested a man on two charges after an early-morning Monday murder in Union Grove.
Gerald Issac Lunsford, 42, of Lunsford Lane, was charged with murder and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. He is being held at the Iredell County Detention Center without bond.
The incident began early Monday when deputies responded to a call of a possible suicide on Lunsford Lane, Sheriff Darren Campbell stated in a news release.
Campbell outlined the investigation as the following in a news release:
When deputies arrived, they found Jera Lee Wagoner, 40, of North Wilkesboro, lying in the yard with what appeared to be a gunshot wound. Deputy J. Hodges began CPR.
A witness in the home said two males ran from the residence prior to the deputy’s arrival; deputies began to seek these men.
Iredell County EMS arrived and declared the victim dead at 2:05 a.m.
A short time after Crime Scene investigators and deputies arrived, a man arrived telling investigators that his son had contacted him by phone saying he needed a ride. Investigators were able to speak with and met with a witness. He told investigators that Lunsford had shot the woman and that he ran from the residence because he was scared he would have also been shot.
Later in the morning, Lunsford arrived at the sheriff’s office and agreed to be interviewed by investigators. He made statements about shooting a rifle and said the reason that he ran was he is a convicted felon.
Based on statements of witnesses, Lunsford’s statement and evidence gathered at the scene, investigators charged Lunsford with murder and felony possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
