A husband and wife are accused of wrongfully accepting thousands in aid from the Iredell County Department of Social Services, warrants indicate.
Charles Alan Howell and Tara Whitney Howell, of Husky Lane, were arrested Thursday and charged with felony medical assistance recipient fraud. Tara Howell, 31, was also charged with felony food nutrition fraud.
Both were released on $10,000 unsecured bonds.
Warrants stated Charles Howell, 37, unlawfully received $1,735.39 in public assistance between Oct. 1, 2017 and Dec. 31, 2018; citing his failure to report his self-employment.
Tara Whitney accepted $13,768 in food assistance between Sept. 1, 2016 and Dec. 31, 2018, and an additional $8,589.83 from March 1, 2017 to Feb. 28, 2019, warrants indicate.
Collectively, the couple accepted $24,093.22 in aid, authorities said. Warrants list the Department of Social Services as filing the complaint.
State records show Charles Howell has a criminal history of possessing stolen goods, drug possession and various traffic offenses.
