A Statesville man has been charged with assault after reportedly attacking a woman multiple times.
Derwin La-Maine Mathis, 38, of Metropolitan Avenue, was arrested June 18 and charged with felony assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury. He was also charged with misdemeanor communicating threats and two counts of assault on a female.
Mathis received an $85,000 secured bond when he appeared before a magistrate. Staff at the Iredell County Detention Center said he posted bail Thursday night.
On June 10, warrants state Mathis assaulted the woman with a kitchen knife and inflicted serious injury. He also grabbed the arms of the woman and punched her in the right eye, telling her, “If you don’t leave here, I am going to kill you,” warrants state.
The Statesville Police Department said it received a report concerning domestic assault on June 14.
Warrants stated the woman was assaulted again on June 18, where Mathis hit her in the face, pulled out portions of her hair and cut the top front of her hair with a pair of scissors.
State records show Mathis has a criminal history of two DWIs.
Jail records also list Mathis as having an address on Kennedy Drive.
He is scheduled to appear in court July 17.
