Multiple police officers responded to a shooting in Statesville on Monday afternoon.

Officers were working in the parking lot of the former Kmart off of East Broad Street after the reported shooting. Eyewitness Chris Stanton, an employee of the Statesville Record & Landmark, said that he was driving in the area when he heard "two pops" and looked around and saw a guy standing and aiming a gun in the parking lot in the area behind the Burger King.

The shots were fired at an orange Ford Escape. The person then climbed back into their white sedan and exited the area.

The Escape drove toward Eastside Drive and then stopped and what appeared to be three youths ran from the vehicle, Stanton said. The police were seen gathering evidence at the scene, Stanton said, and the smell of gasoline was coming from the car once it stopped.

Officers were later seen picking bullet casings up out of the parking lot.
