A Taylorsville woman, charged with driving while impaired after a crash involving an Alexander County school bus in December, is now facing more charges.

Kimberly Ann Austin, 56, was arrested Thursday evening on eight counts of felony serious injury by a vehicle while engaged in the offense of impaired driving, said Master Trooper Jeffrey Swagger. Bond was set at $500,000.

Austin was initially charged with DWI and driving left of center following the Dec. 17 crash on Icard Ridge Road.

Swagger said Austin was operating a vehicle, traveling south on Icard Ridge Road and crossed the center line, striking the bus. After the collision, the bus overturned. There were 19 children on the bus and there was a 10-year-old in Austin’s vehicle, Swagger said.

After the initial charges of DWI and driving left of center were filed Austin was charged with two counts of misdemeanor child abuse.
