How can a community make a difference in the life of a child? Just ask volunteers and friends at the Angel Wings Foundation at Shiloh Afterschool tutoring program. Started in January, the Angel Wings Foundation at Shiloh AME Zion Church in Statesville served over 40 students and logged more than 20 tutoring hours for the 2018-19 school year. Students excelled in many ways over the course of the school year.

Shiloh AME Zion Church sponsored the location and transportation for students. An organization run by Saifah McCollum called Know Better Do Better for Life was incredibly instrumental in the success of the program as well as the Statesville Police Department. The Iredell-Statesville School Nutrition sponsored meals for the tutoring sessions.

Through the collaboration of all of these organizations, the Angel Wings at Shiloh program was able to provide homework assistance, test preparation, mentoring and free dinner to every child who participated. Shiloh AME Zion also hosted a summer STEM program. The program was facilitated by Margaret Nelson of Shiloh AME Zion Church and the Angel Wings Foundation supported the program.

Kimberly Wasson of the Angel Wings Foundation is looking forward to the 2019-2020 school year.

“As a result of the tutoring program, grades improved as well as attitudes towards education. We also saw an increased confidence and student self-esteem sky rocketed. I want to thank the school district for allowing us to partner with them”
