Middle school and high school art teachers from across the Iredell-Statesville School District held their Early Release Professional Development session at Martin Luther King Jr. Park on Wednesday afternoon.
Each teacher/artist was charged with painting whatever inspired them from their surroundings.
Executive Director of Secondary Education Kelly Cooper said: “Adam Szafranski, art teacher at Statesville High School, has done an outstanding job leading the visual-arts professional learning community across the district. Our teachers need to be able to work together as professionals and to have time to practice and reflect on the creative process. When they are able to feed their souls, they are able to feed the souls of our children.
“So often we do professional development for the teacher part, so I thought it would be great to focus on our art part.”
The arts teachers in I-SS plan to auction off their paintings at an upcoming event to fund a fine-arts scholarship to a deserving student.
