The Iredell-Statesville Schools hosted the district robotics tournament at the Statesville Civics Center in April. I-SS worked with the FIRST Lego League throughout the school year to bring students the opportunity to participate in specific robotics-based curriculum and official ranking tournaments throughout the state.

This year’s curriculum theme was “Into Orbit.” Students were asked to program robots to interact with a field of obstacles that explore, challenge, and innovate the expanse of space. Forty-six teams representing middle and elementary schools throughout the district participated in FIRST Lego League and competed in the I-SS tournament. Thirteen awards were presented on each competition day.

One middle school and one elementary team received the highest recognition and honor of the “Champions Award.”  To receive this award a team had to have the highest scores in the interview component as well as score in the top 40 percent of the robot games. These teams also demonstrated what FIRST Lego League calls gracious professionalism throughout the competition.

The recipients were East Iredell Elementary School, Intergalactic Space Cobras, coached by Lena Watson and Northview Middle School, Codehawks, coached by Nicole Lowe.
