A former counselor from Lake Norman High School received a suspended sentence after pleading guilty to having sex with one of her students.
Amy Hogan Saffos, 43, pleaded guilty Tuesday in Iredell County Superior Court to three counts of sexual activity with a student. She was sentenced to 10 to 21 months and the sentence was suspended for 36 months. She was placed on supervised probation and ordered to register as a sex offender.
Saffos was arrested one year ago after the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office Special Victims Unit began an investigation into a reported sexual relationship between the school counselor and a then 17-yearold male student.
She was a counselor at Lake Norman High School from 2006 until her arrest last year. She’d served as a counselor in the public school system since 1998.
Although the boy was above the age of consent in North Carolina – 16 – Saffos faced charges because she was in a position of authority.
Saffos moved to Texas following her arrest and is believed to be planning to return there, law enforcement officials said.
