South Iredell's Jermie Greene (3) tackles Lake Norman's Joseph Young (21) for a loss on Friday at Lake Norman High School.

MOORESVILLE -- South Iredell scored 14 unanswered first-half points and held off Lake Norman in the second half Friday to win 17-8.

Lake Norman scored the game's final eight points during the last 3 minutes, 10 seconds. That included an odd safety in which, rather than punt, South Iredell retreated 49 yards to bleed more clock. That additional two points was not enough to come from behind.

DAGGER SEQUENCE

Lake Norman punter Zackary Zarybnicky bent down to field a low snap in the fourth quarter and, in the process, his knee touched the ground.

The Vikings took over at the Lake Norman 5 yard line. Cody Hazelton's 18-yard field goal made it a three-possession game with 9:33 seconds left. The Wildcats were unable to overcome that 17-0 deficit.

KEY PLAY

Ta'Vion Connor intercepted a pass and returned it for a touchdown last week against West Iredell. The South Iredell sophomore came up with another big INT on Friday.

With Lake Norman possessing the ball at the South Iredell 15 yard line and threatening to take a 7-0 lead, Connor picked off Gage Smith's pass at the 2.

His 55-yard return gave the ball back to the Vikings at the Lake Norman 43. It set up the Vikings' go-ahead score with 10:27 to go in the second quarter.

Quarterback Ty Everhart scampered into the end zone from the 7 yard line.

PLAYERS OF THE GAME

South Iredell receiver Holland Dowdy and Connor were named the Farm Bureau Insurance Offensive and Defensive Players of the Game, respectively.

Dowdy finished with seven receptions totaling 114 yards.

LOOK WHAT I FOUND

Late in the second quarter, Everhart launched a pass in the red zone that skipped through the hands of Dowdy. Justin Turner was in the right place at the right time.

The ball landed in his hands near the back of the end zone, propelling the Vikings to a 14-0 lead with 1 minute, 27 seconds left in the half.

OTHER STATS

Everhart completed 22 of 32 passes for 219 yards and the TD to Turner.

South Iredell linebacker Jermie Greene recorded two tackles for loss.

Running back Will Gordon, a South Iredell transfer, led the Wildcats rushing attack with 97 yards on 21 carries.

Anthony Limon replaced Gage Smith at quarterback for Lake Norman. He finished 11 of 20 for 97 yards and the TD.

WAITING GAME

The start of the game was delayed by lightning in the area.

Kickoff was 8 p.m. instead of 7:30.

UP NEXT

South Iredell (2-1) travels to Cox Mill next week.

Lake Norman (1-2) wraps up a three-game homestand when it welcomes North Iredell on Sept. 7.
