The N.C. High School Athletic Association state wrestling tournament is this week in Greensboro. Action starts Thursday and wraps up Saturday night.
Iredell County qualified a combined 27 wrestlers in the 2A, 3A and 4A classifications. Six of those captured regional championships in their weight class.
Eight Iredell wrestlers emerged from the 3A West regional Saturday. Statesville had half of those. Jason Shuford was the runner-up at heavyweight. Joe Dishman, Garrett Steele and Robert Shuford were fourth at 138, 182 and 195 pounds, respectively.
North Iredell is sending a trio of wrestlers to Greensboro led by Patrick Mahaffey, who claimed the 3A West region title at 145 pounds. Elijah Hurt was the 220 pound runner-up. Chandler Jordan placed third at 160.
South Iredell’s Christopher Kerley placed fourth at 126.
In the 2A Midwest regional, West Iredell’s Kareen Stevenson recorded a third-place finish at 195 pounds to advance.
Lake Norman’s Kaiden Fisher (120 pounds) and Timmy Kennett (138) won 4A West region championships, as did Mooresville’s Isaac Shaw (152), Dilyn Roudesbush (182) and Austyn Barton (heavyweight).
Runners up at the 4A West regional included Mooresville’s Greg Merriman (106 pounds) and Luke Goodin (160), as well as Lake Norman’s J.T. Richards (126), Carson Floyd (170) and Caleb Tate (195).
Third-place finishers at the 4A West regional included Mooresville’s Davis Freeze (113 pounds), Samson Sokolski (120), Jake Emmert (132) and Ray Watson (220) in addition to Lake Norman’s Alex Baker (heavyweight).
Lake Norman’s Brody Neal (113 pounds) and Thomas Osorio (220) placed fourth at the 4A West regional as did Mooresville’s Weston Weddington (145).
