The student who hanged himself last week at Lake Norman High School has died, a school official confirmed Friday.
The male student died Wednesday evening, according to Susie Wiburg, a spokesperson for Iredell-Statesville Schools.
The school will have additional counseling services on campus Monday when students and staff return from spring break, she said.
Wiburg did not release the victim’s name. According to Iredell County Sheriff’s Office records, he was 17 and lived in Mooresville.
“The family is continuing to ask for privacy and I’m sure we can all appreciate and understand that unimaginable grief,” she said.
Another student found the victim hanging by a makeshift noose April 13 at 10 a.m. in an area near the auditorium, Iredell Sheriff Darren Campbell said.
According to an incident report, he had hanged himself with an electrical cord wrapped around a door.
A school nurse and a school resource officer performed CPR on the victim until emergency crews could arrive, Campbell said, and the victim was transported in critical condition to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.
Campbell said at the time the injury appeared to be self-inflicted.
Wiburg said the student was involved in theater at the school, and extra counseling resources would be available for other theater students.
“That very close-knit group will probably need a little extra care,” she said.
