Eating cupcakes for a cause. What could be better?

Daveste Vineyards and Tanya Topazio are hosting the Second Annual Cupcake Wars Benefiting Make-A-Wish Central and West North Carolina April 13.

Topazio, who is a Mooresville resident and the current Ms. North Carolina Cosmos USA,  chose to support Make-A-Wish with this fundraiser as a way to give back to an organization that has supported her family so much.  Both of Topazio’s nephews, from the Connecticut chapter, are wish kids from the Connecticut chapter. Both were born with congenital heart defects.

“The goal this year is to raise a minimum of $6,000 to fully grant one child's wish,” Topazio said.

The event will also give participants an opportunity to market their brand as well.

“They have the opportunity to win a cash prize in the categories of Tastiest Cupcake, Best Table Presentation, and Overall Crowd Favorite,” Topazio said.

This year’s bakers, thus far, include I Hardt Sugar, Indulge Desserts and Custom Cake Boutique, students of Mitchell Community College with guidance of Chef Bob, Sugar and Spice LKN, Oliver Murphy’s and Peggy M. Haynes.

“Attendees have a great time listening to music, talking with the bakers, tasting cupcakes and Daveste wines, networking and taking a chance with or more of the amazing raffle prizes that have been donated,” Topazio said.

The raffle prizes have been contributed from Lake Norman Jet Ski Rentals, Legacy Sports, Marquee Cinemas, Applebee’s Grill and Bar, AMC Theater, Sweet Grass and more.

Last year, Cupcake Wars was a sold-out event. This year they are expecting the same result.

This year there are two ticket options - general admission and VIP.  General admission is $20 and includes cupcake tasting from each participant and a complementary glass of wine.  VIP admission is $150 and includes admission for four as well as a reserved table, one complimentary bottle of wine, one complimentary snack tray, a swag bag for each person and more.

There will also be vendors on site with products that are free to the public.

“The event takes place from 12-3, so our outside vendors will be there during that time. If we don't sell out online tickets will be available at the door for general admission at 1 p.m.,” Topazio said.

The tentative schedule is: 12- 1 p.m., VIP session; 1-2:15 p.m., general admission; 2:15-2:45 p.m. raffle drawing (must be present to win); 2:45-3 p.m., baker's awards.
