A Lincolnton man was killed after a motorcycle struck a tree overnight on N.C. 73, said N.C. Highway Patrol Master Trooper Jeffrey Swagger.
Jacob Wayne Chase, 24, of Lincolnton was pronounced dead at the scene, Swagger said.
He said at approximately 2:03 a.m. Wednesday, Highway Patrol investigated an incident in Lincoln County on N.C. 73 between Club Drive and Killian Farm Road.
He said a 2002 Harley Davidson motorcycle, operated by Chase, was traveling west and the motorcycle struck a tree that had fallen across the road. Chase was ejected from the motorcycle, Swagger said.
The North Carolina Department of Transportation responded to remove the tree from the area and set up a detour, Swagger said. Duke Energy also responded to repair power lines that were pulled down by the tree.
The roadway was closed for several hours as traffic was rerouted during the investigation and repairs, Swagger said.
