A Winston-Salem man was killed in a fatal crash on I-40 in Iredell County Wednesday afternoon.
Ward Beecher Miller, 65, of Winston-Salem, died at the scene.
The crash occurred around 2:20 p.m. between the 155- and 156-mile markers in the westbound lanes.
Westbound traffic had come to a stop due to a brush fire beside the interstate, said Master Trooper Jeffrey S. Swagger. A 2003 Lexus passenger vehicle was stopped in the right lane. A 2001 Peterbilt tractor-trailer swerved in an attempt to avoid the stopped traffic, but struck the Lexus. The Peterbilt then also struck a Chevrolet pickup truck. The Chevrolet was pushed into a 2013 Kenworth tractor trailer, Swagger stated in a release.
Miller was the driver of the Lexus. A passenger in the Lexus and the driver of the Chevrolet were transported to the hospital by EMS. Their conditions are not currently available, Swagger stated. The Peterbilt was being driven by Charles Marlow Jr., 51, of Hopewell, Pennsylvania.
The westbound lanes of I-40 were closed and traffic was detoured onto US 64 at Exit 162; all lanes were reopened by 6:30 p.m. The investigation is ongoing.
