The Statesville City Council has reached a settlement with Gander RV parent company Camping World concerning the flag flying over the dealership.
The agreement was reached in closed session prior to the regular meeting Monday night and announced by Mayor Costi Kutteh at the start of the meeting. The discussions have been in the works for months, he stated.
Camping World will pay $14,350 in fines and about $2,000 in court fees, Kutteh said. The company will apply for the ordinance for the flag size to be expanded in its zoning district.
The Council has agreed to approve the new ordinance.
The decision will end an ongoing dispute over the flag which is larger than the current ordinance allows.
The Council voted June 17 to deny a change to the ordinance limiting flag size. As the ordinance stands now, the flag flying at the local Gander RV does not comply.
In 2018, council raised the maximum size to 25 by 40 feet. Gander RV then raised a 40-by-80-foot flag.
In October 2018, the city started fining Gander RV daily for the flag. The company has continued accruing fines with each day the flag remains up and a lawsuit was filed against the company.
