Snow is expected to fall in Iredell County Thursday afternoon but accumulation amounts are uncertain, weather forecasts indicate.
A rain/snow mix is expected early Thursday transitioning into full snow Thursday afternoon. Snowfall is expected to continue up until early Friday morning.
Scotty Powell, consultant meteorologist at Carolina Weather Group, said that a cold front will come into the area Tuesday night and will start to stall over South Carolina Wednesday.
Thursday morning, cold air will come into the area from high pressure from the north, creating favorable conditions for snow, Powell said.
Powell said that there is good chance of snowfall but that accumulation numbers will depend on when exactly the rain/snow mix transitions to snow, where exactly the cold front stalls, how much moisture the front produces, how much dry air will be present when the front comes in, and where the heaviest snow bands will form.
All of these factors are uncertain, Powell said.
Powell added that this weather system is particularly unpredictable due to the high pressure being centered in the Ohio valley as opposed to the Northeast.
