A 28-year-old Statesville man died Tuesday evening after he was struck by a pickup truck, which then fled the scene.
Harold Dean Stewart III, of Statesville, died at the scene on Interstate 40 near Exit 154 shortly before 6 p.m. Tuesday.
Trooper Marla Powell of the N.C. Highway Patrol said authorities are searching for a late 1980s model Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck that left the scene after hitting Stewart.
She said Stewart had left Davis Regional Medical Center and was walking along I-40 west in the construction zone. Powell said because of the construction there is no shoulder and Stewart was walking close to the right lane. A woman driving by noticed him and stopped because she was concerned about his appearance.
Stewart was standing beside the car talking with the woman, who had called 911 to get assistance for him, Powell said. A pickup truck ran off the road to the right and hit the concrete construction barrier, the woman’s car and Stewart, killing him.
Powell said the woman indicated the truck continued on westbound on I-40. “She said she didn’t think he got off on I-77,” Powell said.
Powell said the truck is believed to be a 1985 to '87 model and it is two-tone, light blue with a white stripe. She said it likely has heavy front end damage and damage to the right side from hitting the barrier. The grille was recovered at the scene, Powell said.
Anyone with information on this truck can call the highway patrol at 1-800-445-1779 or 704-878-4221.
