The Statesville police officer who hit a 4-year-old with her patrol car last week was charged with a traffic infraction.

Officer A.E. Keslter was charged with failure to yield the right of way to a pedestrian, said Master Trooper Jeffrey Swagger of the N.C. Highway Patrol.

Around 8:30 p.m. Nov. 7, Kestler was operating her patrol car, traveling west on East Broad Street. Swagger said she stopped at the red light at the intersection with Center Street. The child was stopped at a marked crosswalk waiting to cross Center Street. Once the traffic light turned green, Swagger said, the officer in her patrol car started across Center Street and struck the child, who was in the crosswalk.

The child was treated for injuries.
