The Iredell-Statesville Schools middle school basketball tournament finals are Thursday. Lake Norman High School is hosting.
The girls’ championship, which tips off at 5 p.m., features top seed Lakeshore (13-0) against No. 2 seed Mt. Mourne (10-3).
Following that is the boys’ championship. Neither of the top two seeds survived the semifinals. Third seed East Iredell (11-3) will battle No. 4 seed Mt. Mourne (10-4) for the title.
Lake Norman 55, Hopewell 51
HUNTERSVILLE—Jack Edmonson tossed in a game-high 15 points Tuesday night as Lake Norman defeated Hopewell 55-51 in I-Meck Conference action.
Christian Taylor and Seth Aeschliman supplied 12 and 11 points, respectively, for the Wildcats (10-5, 4-2). They led 28-21 at halftime but only by a point entering the fourth quarter, when held a 17-14 scoring edge over the Titans.
Freedom 72, Alexander Central 58
MORGANTON—Freedom made 17 of 20 free throws and turned back Alexander Central 72-58 on Tuesday night.
Que Garner scored 21 points and grabbed eight rebounds to lead the Patriots (14-1, 3-1).
Freedom built a 33-24 halftime advantage and extended its lead to 16 by the end of the third quarter.
Evan Presnell’s 14 points paced the Cougars (9-7, 2-2), who were 3 of 4 from the free throw line. Maddox Kerley contributed 10 points and nine rebounds. Zach Herman also scored 10 points, and Jem Lowrance added nine.
Freedom 65, Alexander Central 44
MORGANTON—A dominate second quarter keyed Freedom’s 65-44 win Tuesday night over Alexander Central.
The Patriots (15-0, 4-0) outscored the Cougars (10-6, 2-2) 29-6 in the second quarter to seize a 45-20 halftime advantage.
Blaikley Crooks scored 22 points and made five steals to lead Freedom. Josie Hise added 18 points.
Sydney Hayes scored 16 points and grabbed nine rebounds to lead Alexander Central.
