The Statesville Owls and Charlotte Crushers entertained fans with another high-scoring Southern Collegiate Baseball League affair Thursday night. This time it was the Crushers prevailing at West Iredell High School, 15-11.
An eight-run fifth inning erased a 4-0 Statesville lead and allowed the Crushers to surge ahead for good, 8-4. Jasiah Hatch and Brennan Whitten each belted two-run homers off Owls pitcher Derek Dyson to key the big inning.
Statesville got two of those runs back in the bottom of the fifth. Charlotte, which dropped the season opener 19-15 at home against the Owls, answered with three runs in the top of the sixth to regain command.
Alex Grooms (Limestone) earned the win on the mound. He went seven innings, allowing eight runs on 10 hits and three walks while striking out four. Dyson took the loss, surrendering eight runs on 10 hits and four walks in 4 2/3 innings. He struck out two.
The loss spoiled strong outings by Statesville’s Luke Orr (Newberry) and Ausar Rankin (Rockingham C.C./West Iredell H.S.). Both homered and finished 2 for 3 at the plate. Orr drove in four runs. Rankin finished with three RBIs.
The Crushers held an 18-13 advantage in hits. Michael Garvey was 3 for 5, and Carl Turner was 3 for 6 with an RBI.
Statesville’s Conner Driscoll (North Greenville) was 3 for 4 with a double and an RBI. Scott Meitzler (NC A&T) drove in two runs, and R.J. Conner (Catawba Valley C.C./Statesville H.S.) contributed an RBI for the Owls.
The Owls, 9-8 entering Friday's game at the Piedmont Pride, welcome the Carolina Vipers to West Iredell High School on Saturday for a doubleheader slated to begin at 5 p.m.
