LENOIR—The fifth-seeded Statesville Owls knocked off the fourth-seeded Lenoir Oilers in the opening round of the Southern Collegiate Baseball League double-elimination playoffs Sunday night, 9-4.
It was the Owls second-ever playoff win and first since 2012.
Statesville (20-19) scored four in the first inning and led 7-0 before the Oilers pushed their first run across in the bottom of the sixth.
Maddux Holshouser (UNC Greensboro) went six strong innings on the mound to earn the pitching win. He struck out nine and allowed only one run on two hits and two walks.
Chase Crouch (Erskine) homered for Statesville and finished 3 for 5 with two RBIs. Ausar Rankin (Rockingham C.C./West Iredell H.S.) Hunter Dula (Wingate/South Iredell H.S.) and Beau Thompson (Newberry) supplied two hits apiece for the Owls.
Luke Orr (Newberry) tripled and drove in two runs, and Conner Driscoll (North Greenville) also picked up an RBI.
The Owls play at the top-seeded Piedmont Pride (25-10) on Monday night. The victor remains in the winner’s bracket. The loser falls to the loser’s bracket and is one defeat away from elimination.
