Luke Orr hit his fifth home run of the season Monday night at West Iredell High School and the Statesville Owls cruised to a 13-4 Southern Collegiate Baseball League victory over the Mooresville Spinners.
Orr (Newberry) smacked a three-run homer to right field in the eighth, extending the Owls' lead to 13-2. He finished 2 for 4 at the plate with a game-high four RBIs.
Statesville (11-9), fourth in the SCBL standings, pulled ahead 3-1 in the bottom of the second inning.
Bo Fricks (Montreat) delivered a two-run shot over the fence that lifted the Owls to a 5-2 advantage in the bottom of the fourth.
The Owls blew the game open with five runs in the sixth inning. Ausar Rankin (Rockingham C.C.) highlighted the outburst with his three-run triple.
Scott Meitzler (N.C. A&T) earned the win on the mound. He limited the Spinners to a pair of runs on six hits over seven innings. Meitzler struck out nine and only walked one.
Austin Ducket took the loss for Mooresville Spinners. He went 4 2/3 innings, allowing four runs on six hits. Ducket struck out five.
Fricks also doubled as part of a 3-for-4 effort at the dish, and he finished with three RBIs.
Rankin was 2 for 5 and also drove in three runs for the Owls. R.J. Conner (Catawba Valley C.C.) contributed two RBIs.
Tyler Leek and Seth McAuly each supplied a home run for Mooresville, which was outhit 11-8 by Statesville.
The Owls kick off a six-game road trip Tuesday night at the Concord A’s. They return home July 12 for another matchup with the A’s.
