A woman housed in the Iredell County Detention Center Annex on Turnersburg Highway hanged herself Wednesday afternoon, according to Iredell Sheriff Darren Campbell.

Delores Walker, 27, was found by authorities in a bathroom at the annex, according to reports.

Campbell said her death is being investigated by his office as well as by the N.C. State Bureau of Investigation. He said he chose to call in the SBI because the woman died while in custody.

He said the woman was arrested Sunday on charges of assault with a deadly weapon and larceny. She was brought to the annex on Tuesday.

Campbell said Wednesday afternoon that Walker told jail personnel she was going to the bathroom and hanged herself inside the bathroom.

She was being housed in a dormitory-style cell, he said.

The initial investigation indicates all required compliance checks were performed and there were no indications that Walker was suicidal, the sheriff said.

Campbell said jail personnel attempted to revive her while awaiting the arrival of Iredell EMS and a nurse was also on the scene and tried to help.
