SIMI VALLEY, Calif. Samuel "Robert" Kennington Jr., 45, of Simi Valley, Calif., and formerly of Statesville, died Wednesday, Aug. 21, 2019, at his residence. Robert is survived by his parents, Betsy Burns Kennington and Sam and Cathy Kennington, all of Statesville. He is also survived by sisters, Mary Lacy Kennington Johnson of Statesville and Ellen Thompson Morgan (Allan) of Huntersville, and nephews, Sam, Walker and Ryder Johnson and Will and Jay Morgan. Surviving aunts are Mary Anne Kennington Crumpler of Fayetteville, and Laura Phelps (Jim) of Alexandria, Va. His surviving uncle is Norvel Burns of the Philippines. Robert was a 1992 graduate of Statesville High School, where he was Senior Class President and played football, basketball and golf. He was a 1998 graduate of N.C. State University with a degree in Natural Resources. Robert will always be remembered for his love of music and animals, his enthusiasm for Carolina Panthers and N.C. State Wolfpack sports, his wit, thoughtfulness and infectious smile. He will be deeply missed by his family and many friends. A celebration of life and friendship service will be held at 3 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 14, at Broad Street United Methodist Church in Statesville. The family will receive friends in Memorial Hall following the service. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 15, at Hester Family Cemetery, 4444 Gordonton Rd. in Hurdle Mills. Memorials may be made to Broad Street United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 169, Statesville, NC 28687 and designated for the new Church Community Playground Fund or Lake Norman Humane, P.O. Box 3937, Mooresville, NC 28117.
