STATESVILLE Francis Earlene Louise Smith Massey, 100, of Statesville, known as Earlene, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 17, 2019. She was born July 22, 1919, to the late William M. Smith and Roneta Clodfelter Smith. She was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Frank Allen Massey; and her siblings, Eulah Mae Anderson, Eugene Smith and William Horace Smith. She is survived by her children, Smith A. Massey and wife, Peggy, Dwenda M. Goodman and husband, Mark; grandchildren, Aric Ledford and wife, Julie, Chad A. Massey and wife, Alicia, Wendy G. Belk and husband, Michael, Misti R. Gault and husband, Charles; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews survive. Earlene graduated salutatorian of the class of 1936 from Sharon School in Iredell County. She married Frank Massey in 1949 while she was working at David Hospital in the records department. Earlene was a mild-mannered woman, kind, polite and proper and she always shared a smile. She loved growing roses and other flowers in her yard, many times cutting the fresh flowers and sharing them with friends and neighbors. She was a member of the Monticello Garden Club and hosted many meetings in her home on Old Wilkesboro Road. She was also a faithful member of Trinity United Methodist Church. She taught Sunday school, Bible school and was an integral part of the United Methodist Women's Association. She was an accomplished seamstress, making many of her clothes as well as clothes for her children and granddaughters. She celebrated her 90th birthday in 2009 and enjoyed having a former classmate as well as friends and family for the celebration. In July of 2019 she celebrated her milestone 100th birthday, at Maple Leaf Healthcare, with many friends and relatives. Family would like to thank the staff of Maple Leaf Healthcare for their genuine love and care for our mother. A celebration of life service will be held at Trinity United Methodist Church, at 3 p.m., Friday, Sept. 20, with burial following in the church cemetery. Family will receive friends in the fellowship hall following the services. Memorials may be made to Trinity United Methodist Church, 106 Trinity Rd., Statesville, NC 28625.
