Wednesday marked one month since the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office conducted Operation Autumn Harvest.

On Sept. 16, Sheriff Darren Campbell said that roughly 70 people were targeted in the countywide drug roundup; a news release said 30 were already in custody and another 23 were listed as wanted.

On Wednesday, Campbell said that the overall intention of the endeavor is to drive down crime rates and make the community safer.

“I think it shows the commitment the community has to eradicating drugs,” he said.

Campbell noted much of the information used in the arrests came from community members, calling their support a true testament.

Operation Autumn Harvest follows two other widespread drug roundups from October 2018 and April 2019, both of which targeted a similar amount of suspects. Campbell said that routine drug arrests help grow distrust among drug dealers and force illicit narcotic activity out of the county. He added the number of suspects targeted stays fairly consistent due to available personnel and because Campbell feels that’s the number where his department can deliver a quality caseload to the district attorney.

He also said with 75% of crime having a drug nexus, more raids are sure to come.

“We will do another one,” Campbell said. “If you’re not on this one, you’ll be on the next one.”
