Letter to the editor

This was not a fair method for voting

While the North Carolina governor and others were remembering a historic attack on democracy, the lives lost, the coming together of a nation in mourning, the North Carolina House of Representatives, led by Speaker Tim Moore, called a vote to override Governor Cooper’s veto of the Republican budget while Democratic representatives were absent. He achieved his “success” by Republicans’ misleading assurance that the bill would not come up for voting on Sept. 11. The vote was called at 8:30 a.m. Democrats foolishly took Republicans at their word. Speaker Moore smiled in delight.

This is not the party of my colleagues at Gardner-Webb University during my long tenure as professor of English. My Republican colleagues were thinking, honorable people. Their party is dissolved in a Trumpian mishmash.

Many Iredell County citizens qualify for Medicaid. The Republican-led budget omitted potential federal Medicaid funding needed in our state. In Iredell County, we have underpaid, hardworking people and retirees who need medical attention. In some cases, such funding could well be life-or-death issues. Republicans do not wish to allow this life-saving benefit for our people.

The Senate could stop this unethical betrayal of democracy. I call on Senator Vicki Sawyer to score a victory, not for political manipulation, but for democracy, ethics, and compassion for her constituents.

Hope American voters are paying attention

The Democrats have had control of the House for awhile now. They have not put anything forward to make life better for the American citizens. All their time has been spent wasting taxpayer money on this plan to get the president just because they don’t like him, not because the president has done anything to be impeached for.

The president has done more for this country by himself than any other president or Congress has done in decades. The president has done this despite all the Democrats trying to stop everything on his agenda. The fact that President Trump won the election is not a reason to impeach.

Hope all the voters remember all this wasting of time and re-elect the president and replace all these worthless Democrats with people that will work for the American people instead of themselves. Come on America, let’s do the right thing again in 2020.

New record

Trump has broken a record, the budget deficit is now over 1 trillion dollars. That’s $1,000,000,000,000.

He probably doesn’t care, he got a piece of the big tax break.
