Firefighters-to-be got their chance to fight a real house fire Friday during a live burn training.
Around two dozen firefighters were involved in the live burn training in the 700 block of Wall Street. They worked on controlling a blaze at a home the property owners requested to be burned, officials with the city of Statesville stated.
Statesville Fire Department Capt. Kyle Bell, who oversaw Friday’s exercise, explained that the timing matched up with the need to certify new fire recruits at Mitchell Community College.
“This training is invaluable to the continued mission of our department to be ready to fight fires and save lives,” Fire Chief Spencer Lee stated in a release. “It’s also a contributing factor in our national accreditation as a fire service and the ISO rating, which affects fire insurance rates.”
