A determined bid by previously undefeated Pine Lake Prep’s boys tennis team to advance out of third-round play within the N.C. High School Athletic Association’s 1A dual-team playoffs was barely denied by the team that reached the state finals.
Ultimately done in by doubles, the Pride – regular season champions of their PAC-7 Conference - absorbed their season’s first defeat 5-4 to perennial power Bishop McGuiness in the third round of the West Region semifinals.
The defeat completed Pine Lake’s season with a 13-1 overall record.
Bishop McGuiness wound up capturing the regional title to also keep its own unblemished season intact and matched up against East Region winner Research Triangle for the NCHSAA 1A dual-team tennis title.
Pine Lake pushed its state elite-eight round bout into doubles before drawing its season to a close.
During the singles segment of play, the duo of Tyler Ramanata and Davis Cohen both prevailed for the 4-2 spread in place through the opening phase.
Ramanata downed his opponent in straight sets, while Cohen emerged as winner via a third-set tiebreaker.
During doubles, the Pride twosome of Ramanata and teammate Anthony Dotson were joined by the duo of Cohen and court running mate Andrew Zarsadias as winners as well. However, in order to surface with the win, Pine Lake had to sweep all three doubles to collect the team win.
