Making major headway, Mooresville junior running back Glenwood Robinson plows his way towards the end zone on one of his three touchdown carries during opening-round play in the N.C. High School Athletic Association 4A class playoffs.

Page one of Mooresville High School football team’s postseason play is now in the book.

Blue Devils’ junior running back Glenwood Robinson rushed for three touchdowns and Mooresville overcame the losing of four turnovers to turn back Greensboro Page, 27-15, during Friday night’s opening-round of the N.C. High School Athletic Association’s playoffs.

Mooresville piled up more than half its scoreboard damage over the course of a mere three-second span late in second-period play to improve to the 7-5 level for the season overall.

More importantly, though, the Devils terminated the season of the region’s No. 11-seeded Page Pirates to merit the extending of their own season into second-round play.

Robinson, sharing time in the backfield, scratched on carries of 13 and four yards both taking place over the course of first early and then late second-period play to account for the bulk of the 20-0 edge at the intermission break.

It was the way the Devils headed into that locker room just before the half however that dropped the Pirates to their knees.

Sitting on a mere 7-0 edge courtesy of Robinson’s first strike coming less than two minutes into the second quarter, he notched his second TD tote on the four-yarder with just under three seconds left.

After Mooresville then surprised Page with not only the executing but also the recovering of the ensuing onside kick. Placekicker-turned-quarterback Isaac Riffle received the direct snap out of field goal formation and lofted a 34-yard scoring pass to a wide-open Malik Birchett streaking downfield for the second touchdown with no time left on the clock.

Comfortably sitting on the seemingly sizable cushion upon the beginning of third-period play, matters grew much testier than the Devils envisioned by allowing Greensboro to retaliate. The Pirates scored of all their points in the last eight minutes-plus of the third period and the first near four minutes of play in the fourth.

Page sandwiched its two TDs around a forced defensive safety to draw to the 20-15 mark with more than half final period left to play. Aiding that particular surge included the tossing of three interceptions on the part of the Devils.

A final defensive stand by Mooresville forced a turnover on downs deep inside the Pirates’ territory. That set the stage for Robinson’s third and final points-producing punch from seven yards out and took place inside the final minute for the final margin.

Along with his three scores, Robinson finished his night with seven carries good for 29 yards that topped the team’s ground-gaining chart.

In addition to his touchdown pass play coming from the depths of Mooresville’s playbook, kicker Riffle was also successful on two of his three point-after kicks.

MHS quarterback Hunter DeBerardino completed nine passes for right at 100 yards through the air.

Mooresville moves on in postseason play to take on No.3-seeded Jamestown Ragsdale, which despite an overall losing record – sitting at 5-6 – garnered a first-round bye from the playoffs.

Game time is set for 7:30 p.m. at Ragsdale’s Friday.
